How To Play Craps

Craps is a popular and exciting casino game that is easy to learn, but mastering it can take some time. The game is played with two dice, and the objective is to predict the outcome of the roll. Here are the basic rules and steps to play craps:

The Table: Craps is played on a special table that features a betting layout with various sections for different types of bets. Familiarize yourself with the table layout and the different bets available.

The Shooter: One player is designated as the “shooter,” who rolls the dice. The shooter must place a bet on either the Pass Line or the Don’t Pass Line before rolling the dice.

Come Out Roll: The first roll of the dice by the shooter is called the “come out roll.” This roll establishes the point for the round.

Pass Line Bet: If you place a bet on the Pass Line, you are betting that the shooter will roll a 7 or 11 on the come out roll, or roll a point number and then roll that point number again before rolling a 7. If the shooter rolls a 2, 3, or 12 (craps) on the come out roll, the Pass Line bet loses.

Don’t Pass Line Bet: If you place a bet on the Don’t Pass Line, you are betting that the shooter will roll a 2 or 3 on the come out roll, or roll a point number and then roll a 7 before rolling that point number again. If the shooter rolls a 7 or 11 on the come out roll, the Don’t Pass Line bet loses. A 12 on the come out roll is a push, meaning neither the house nor the player wins.

Point Number: If the shooter rolls a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 on the come out roll, that number becomes the point. The shooter must then roll the point number again before rolling a 7 for Pass Line bets to win. If the shooter rolls a 7 before the point number, Don’t Pass Line bets win.

Come and Don’t Come Bets: These bets are similar to Pass Line and Don’t Pass Line bets, but they can be placed after the come out roll and the point has been established. Come bets win if the next roll is a 7 or 11 and lose if it’s a 2, 3, or 12. Don’t Come bets win if the next roll is a 2 or 3, lose if it’s a 7 or 11, and push if it’s a 12.

Place Bets, Field Bets, and Proposition Bets: There are various other bets that can be placed on the table, including Place Bets (betting on specific numbers), Field Bets (betting on a group of numbers), and Proposition Bets (betting on specific outcomes, such as rolling a hard 8). Each bet has its own odds and payouts.

Rolling the Dice: The shooter continues to roll the dice until they either roll the point number again or roll a 7. If the point number is rolled, Pass Line bets win, and a new round begins with the same shooter. If a 7 is rolled, Don’t Pass Line bets win, and the role of the shooter passes to the next player.

Practice and Strategy: Craps can be an intimidating game for beginners, but with practice and an understanding of the various bets and their odds, you can become a more skilled player. Develop a strategy based on the bets with the best odds, and manage your bankroll carefully.

Etiquette: When playing craps in a casino, follow proper etiquette. Handle the dice with one hand, and do not take them beyond the edge of the table. Also, place your bets only when the dice are in the middle of the table, and avoid touching the chips once the shooter has the dice.

Learn the Lingo: Craps has its own unique language, so familiarize yourself with common terms like “yo” (eleven), “boxcars” (twelve), “hard ways” (rolling a number with both dice showing the same value, e.g., 4-4 for an 8), and “horn bet” (betting on a combination of 2, 3, 11, and 12).

Observe and Learn: If you’re new to craps, spend some time watching others play before joining a table. This will help you get a feel for the game and learn the pace and flow of the table.

Set a Budget: Before playing craps, set a budget for yourself and stick to it. This will help ensure that you don’t lose more money than you’re willing to risk.

Have Fun: Finally, remember that craps is a social game, and one of the most enjoyable aspects of playing is the camaraderie and excitement at the table. Engage with other players, cheer for the shooter, and have fun while playing responsibly.

By following these steps and practicing, you can gain a better understanding of craps and increase your chances of success at the table. As you become more experienced, you may also develop your own strategies and preferences for different types of bets. Just remember that, ultimately, craps is a game of chance, so always play responsibly and within your means.

Remember, craps is a game of chance, and there is no guaranteed winning strategy. However, understanding the game, making smart bets, and being disciplined with your money management can significantly improve your chances of success.

  2. I won $97 at Binions on Saturday night in about 45 min. I always bet the minimum $5 on the pass line and randomly bet the field. Hey it worked for me! Plus I got free drinks (always tip! or you’ll get bad luck!)

  3. Finally a helpful Craps video that doesn’t have something seriously wrong with it. This guy is good, it’s kinda like having an uncle explain it to you in his furnished parlor game basement.

  4. Great video…have never shot craps in any casino just games at fine homes and clubs. I now see why so many trusted folks in my 55 years have said if you go to Vegas you might as well open your wallet and give them your money b/c your money is a gift in Vegas. Don’t like to be put on a limit when I get hot! Oh, where is the tight trip wire/string across the table that the dice must pass over otherwise they can be controlled..believe I’ll pass on casino anything gambling.

  5. I viewed this video by Brian Stevenson and loved his technique on teaching the game. I would love to see more videos. The first time I’ve ever seen Craps played was when my girlfriend played.

  6. everybody has there own certain system…you would have to read other peoples system and choose your own.
A simple system is the PASS Line/ COME Bet.

  7. Could you post some strategies to the game? I played for the first time a couple months ago at the casino and I just played the field. And I ended up winning like 300 but this guy next to me said the field isn’t always that hot. I’m just wanting to know some smart bets.

  8. thnx, but u win on lay & place bets if first roll is 8 and second is 6 rite??? and win the pass line bet if rolls 8 twice in a row before 7 comes, in order to win the pass line and pass line odds ( behind pass line ) bets , shooter has to roll two 8’s before 7…. i guess.

    tnx,

  9. if you roll an 8 on the first roll that becomes your point and then you must roll another 8 in order to win. if you roll a 7 (craps) before the 8, then you lose. any other number, you keep rolling until you crap out…

    hope that helps..

  10. so let’s say shooter rolls a 8 on a first roll, and rolls a 6 on the second, in order to win the shooter has to roll a 6 on the third roll to get paid????? roll twice same # to get paid….
